7++ Things To Do In Manila As Seen On ABS-CBN’s Summer Station ID #PINASmile

By Jeric Pena • April 1, 2014 • City Guides, Manila Travel Ideas, Travel

Summer is here! The state weather bureau has officially declared the start of the summer (or dry) season in the Philippines about a week ago. That means many people are on the look out for fun activities during this dry, hot and humid season usually spent away from work and school.

While some immediately think of Philippine beaches during summer, folks at ABS-CBN decided to highlight alternative getaways on their station ID that are perfect for the season. As I watched the entirety of the music video titled #PINASmile—a play on the words Pilipinas (Philippines) and smile—I felt that it wishes to point out that Manila isn’t just a hop-off point for those who wish to enjoy Philippine beaches and islands. Manila has a lot to offer and every tourist—whether local or foreign—should spend a few days to enjoy the Philippine capital. It is a legit tourist destination! I think it is about time that tourists know what the Philippines has to offer beyond Boracay.

Here are 7++ things that you can do in Manila (as seen on the #PINASmile video) that will surely make you smile!

1. Explore Manila via its unique means of transportation

Locals may think that Manila has the worst public transportation system in the world. But Manila has unique means of transportation too that make moving around city more fun.

Philippine Jeepney

You may reach different tourist spots and attractions in Manila by riding the ubiquitous jeepney. It is considered by many as the most popular means of transportation within the city. I think that riding one is the most cost-effective way of exploring the Philippine capital.

Pedicab

If you need to reach some side streets, then the pedicab might be for you. Guided tours via this unique means of transportation are available in Intramuros, Manila.

Kalesa

Some say that the best way to explore the historic district of Intramuros is by riding a kalesa (horse-drawn carriage). You can explore this little Spain within the city of Manila aboard this ancient means of transportation.

2. Spend an entire day at Rizal Park

Rizal Park Activities

There are so many things to do in Rizal Park and one can easily spend an entire day within its premises. You can jog, do aerobics, play sports on its grounds without anyone bothering you. You may also enjoy favorite Filipino snacks like the taho by checking out the ambulant vendors. Don’t forget to take #selfies or souvenir photos with the Rizal monument on the background.
